Congenital heart disease is the most common birth defect, affecting about 1 in 100 children worldwide. With more than 60,000 births a year in Sabah alone, congenital heart disease remains a major challenge, especially for rural families who must travel for specialist care.
The Society for the Sabah Heart Fund was set up in 1981 to provide financial aid for underprivileged Sabahans who require cardiac surgery or intervention outside the state. Over the years, SOSHF has collaborated with hospitals and partners including Institut Jantung Negara, Gleneagles Kuala Lumpur, Gleneagles Hospital Kota Kinabalu, and Sejong General Hospital in Korea.
More than 700 Sabahans with heart disease, mostly children, have received assistance through this mission.
